Monthly update: June 2024

While the weather may not be sunny just yet (at least for us in the Netherlands), we’re glad to brighten your day with a wrap-up of all new features and improvements from last month. We’ve implemented changes for managing your publications and improved the overall design experience of the Pro Editor.

Easily clone elements with ‘alt’ or ‘option’ + drag

What changed?
A shortcut was added for cloning elements quickly. Either use option + drag or alt + drag.

Why?
Most designers are familiar with universal shortcuts used in various design programs. We want to facilitate a quick and seamless design experience by incorporating similar shortcuts.

What it means for you
Using either option + drag or alt + drag to clone elements. This also works on a selection of multiple elements!

Change the colour of multiple elements at once

What changed
The colour of multiple elements can be changed at once from one menu.

Why
Having to change the colour of multiple elements with the same colour is tedious and time-consuming. This feature provides control over the colours of your selected elements - even when they are not of the same colour.

What it means for you
Select multiple elements by either dragging your mouse over them or holding shift. To the right, you will find a menu called ‘colour replacer’ that contains all the available colours within your selection. Try changing the colours and see how elements of that particular colour follow.

Use image blocks as placeholders & additional ‘fill’ option

What’s changed?
We’ve adjusted the behaviour of image elements. It is now possible to style and position image containers as a placeholder and add your actual image later without losing the added styling. Additionally, there is now an option to ‘fit’ your image into the container. The image is then resized to the wrapper’s ratio - even when replacing images.

Why?
This allows designers to design and wireframe without dependency on the final assets. Rest assured your styling properties will remain when filling your publication with images.

What it means for you
Try it out yourself! Use image blocks without the need for an actual image to plot out new designs.

Publication previews have a new URL structure

What’s changed?
The way preview URLs are displayed and shared has changed. Going to your publication’s preview, you will find that the domain is always set to preview.maglr.com . Additionally, your shareable preview link is separately generated.

Why?
We’ve changed the URL for several reasons:

  • To prevent confusion between the live and preview URLs of your publication
  • Previously not being able to view other publication previews when still in ‘preview mode’ of one project
  • In preparation for the commentary feature that we are currently developing (more on that later)

What this means for you
Other than the URL change, you won’t find any changes to the preview itself. Do make sure to share the generated preview link instead of the URL from your browser’s address bar. An external person won’t have access to your preview via the latter.

Your shareable preview link can be found by clicking the ‘Share preview’ button at the top in preview mode. The link should contain a random hash, for example, ‘https://preview.maglr.com/s/p/N5V9jonXCIR/YWlkYS5tYWdsci5jb21

Show/hide the navigation menu per publication

What’s changed?
We’ve enabled an option to show or hide the navigation in your publication without affecting other publications.

Why?
The navigation interface is managed centrally which previously meant that it was not possible to hide navigation without removing it from all your publications.

What this means for you
Within ‘project settings’, you will find a toggle to show/hide the navigation of a publication. Setting this to show/hide will only apply those settings to that particular publication. This may be particularly useful for Pro publications which allow you to add buttons to the side menu.

Canonical URL for duplicated pages

What’s changed?
We’ve added the option to set a canonical URL for pages that are used in multiple projects.

Why?
The Google search engine requires content to be unique. If it encounters two pages that contain the same contents, it will only index one page. A canonical URL tells Google which version to prioritise and therefore improves SEO. This can be particularly useful when using the same page in multiple projects - regardless of whether it’s linking or duplicating.

What this means for you
If you do not have duplicate pages or don’t prioritise SEO, this option might not be a necessary step for you to take. If you do want to set a canonical URL, go to your page’s settings and navigate to the ‘SEO’ tab. There you can paste your canonical URL.

Live support through WhatsApp

We stand by personal, live support. Alongside our chat from within the Maglr platform, you can now also contact us through WhatsApp. An easy option for when your planning is unpredictable, for example, contact us from WhatsApp desktop and receive our continued support on your mobile device when you are on the go.

We are available on +31765430852.

Small changes - big impact

We are continuously updating, improving and fixing Maglr. These changes are not always noticeable, but still impactful. Here are some of last month’s noteworthy changes:

  • Removed the option to overwrite an image source on mobile in favour of changing the source on desktop only. Overwriting position, styling and other settings on mobile remains the same.
  • Removed ‘select’ action from ‘undo’ as we deemed it unnecessary
  • Improved configuration for the first frame of keyframe animations
  • Fixed element positions when dropping them from the layers panel in the mobile design workspace
